In Search of Abstract Expressionism refers to the CIA promotion of Abstract Expressionism during the cold war. Art was used as propaganda in order to enhance the position of the USA as the antipode of the Soviet Union. Abstract painting was pitched against Soviet Socialist Realist propaganda painting. The painting is based on a cut out from a newspaper showing the CIA.
